Authors:

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a personal authentication method using heartbeat waveforms to enhance the security in wireless communication. The heartbeat waveform of a human being has discriminative characteristic features, and the mimicking is very difficult. Therefore, their application to personal authentication has been studied. Existing methods for heartbeat based personal authentication are focused only on the amplitude of the heartbeat. In order to increase the amount of heartbeat features, we propose an authentication method using the area of heartbeat in addition to the amplitude. To validate that our personal authentication method is applicable, we perform some experiments to show that our method provides better authentication than existing ones.

Active Contour based Automatic Feedback for Optical Character Recognition

Authors:

Joanna Isabelle Olszewska

Abstract: In this paper, we present a new optical character recognition approach. Our method combines chromaticitybased character detection with active contour segmentation in order to robustly extract optical characters from real-world images and videos. The detected character is recognized using template matching. Our developed approach has shown excellent results when applied to the automatic identification of team players from online datasets and is more efficient than the state-of-the-art methods.

Detection and Tracking of the Human Hot Spot

Authors:

Carlos M. Travieso, Malay Kishore Dutta, Jordi Solé-Casals and Jesús B. Alonso

Abstract: This work presents an algorithm that receives as input a stream of thermal imaging detects heat sources present in them and classify them according to their mobility. After performing the experiment and given the results, it is concluded that the algorithm performed is able to discern and classify the different types of human bodies as long as you can provide a set of detection parameters adjusted to the situation, indoor or outdoor; and with one or more persons.

Title:

Population Ageing and ICT - An Exploratory Review of Technology Innovation trough Digital Applications

Authors:

Jordi Solé-Casals, Mihaela Vancea, Jaume Miquel March and Jordi Villà-Freixa

Abstract: The multidimensional process of physical, psychological, and social change produced by population ageing affects not only the quality of life of elderly people but also of our societies. Some dimensions of population ageing grow and expand over time (e.g. knowledge of the world events, or experience in particular situations), while others decline (e.g. reaction time, physical and psychological strength, or other functional abilities like reduced speed and tiredness). Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can help elderly to overcome possible limitations due to ageing. As a particular case, biometrics can allow the development of new algorithms for early detection of cognitive impairments, by processing continuous speech, handwriting or other challenged abilities. Among all possibilities, digital applications (Apps) for mobile phones or tablets can allow the dissemination of such tools. In this article, after presenting and discussing the process of population ageing and its social implications, we explore how ICTs through different Apps can lead to new solutions for facing this major demographic challenge.
