Investigation of the Neuro-electrostimulation Mechanisms by Means of the Functional MRI: Case Study

Abstract: The article overviewed contemporary neuromodulation approaches and challenges. The importance of the neurostimulation techniques was justified. The SYMPATHOCOR-01 neuro-electrostimulation device characterization was presented. The case study of the neuro-electrostimulation mechanisms by means of the neuroimaging was described. Case study consisted of 3 phases: imaging prior to the neuro-electrostimulation procedure, imaging right after the neuro-electrostimulation procedure and imaging after a 5-day stimulation course. Results of the functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed improvement of the functional connectivity strength in several brain regions as well as normalization of default mode network activity.

Title:

Development of the Decision Support System in Treatment of Arterial Hypertension - Application of Artificial Neural Networks for Evaluation of Heart Rate Variability Signals

Abstract: The article presents first step of the decision support system development in treatment of arterial hypertension. Results of arterial hypertension diagnostic task by short-term signals of heart rate variability are presented. The tilt test study was used as the functional load. The peculiarity of this work is application of neural networks for this task. The different number of hidden layers in the neural networks and different number of neurons in hidden layers were tested in this study. The classification accuracy of the neural networks was compared with those of simple machine learning classifiers. The following steps of the decision support system development are declared.

Title:

Translingual Neurostimulation in Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy in the Late Residual Stage. Case Study

Abstract: Management of cerebral palsy is an actual problem of modern medicine. A new direction of neurorehabilitation, intensively discussed in modern science and practice, includes various types of electrical stimulation. Constant stimulation of the nervous system is one of the most popular ways to activate neural networks in order to activate the brain and initiate neuroplasticity processes. Participants in the experiment were children with cerebral palsy, spastic diplegia form at the age of 6 to 19 (n = 6) (mean age - 17,9 ± 5,6 years). All subjects underwent standard treatment, including massage, therapeutic gymnastics simulators, robotic mechanotherapy, etc., which lasted 20-25 minutes with neurostimulation of the brain (using a PoNS device). All subjects underwent a functional brain imaging (MRI) before and after neurostimulation course. Results indicate positive dynamics in all subjects: most of them learned walking without aids, decreased muscle tonus and improvement in balance, coordination function were noted. Neurostimulation with the PonS device combined with curative gymnastics (focused exercises), improves the efficiency of motor functions and development of motor skills. Functional MRI with an active paradigm, with proper and high-quality performance, is an auxiliary method of objective control of treatment effectiveness.

Title:

On The Possibilities of Neuro-electrostimulation for Increasing Learning Parameters

Abstract: The paper describes the results of using the neuro-electrostimulation device for improving the attention and working memory characteristics, which are one of the main parameters of cognition in the learning process. It was shown that the quality of the test for assessment of working memory and attention in the experimental group with the use of neuro-electrostimulation was higher than in the control group. Also it was found that the application of neuro-electrostimulation could be used as a corrective technique for subjects with low initial values of test parameters, which allows increasing the test results for assessing working memory and attention.

Title:

Non-invasive Multichannel Electrostimulation of Neck Nerve Structures for the Treatment of Patients with Anxiety Disorders

Abstract: The efficiency of non-invasive multichannel neuro-electrostimulation device (‘SYMPATHOCOR-01’) for treatment of anxiety disorders against the standard antidepressant medication is presented in article. Forty patients from psychiatric clinic with diagnosed 'panic disorder' were treated and followed-up during six weeks. The Hamilton (HAM-A) and Sheehan (SPRAS) anxiety scales were used to determine changes in state of patients. Electrostimulation has helped patients quickly overcome symptoms of anxiety and better control panic attacks. There was a significant difference in the final psychometric assessment of anxiety among groups on the Hamilton (HAM-A) and Sheehan (SPRAS) scales almost twice.

Study of the Neuro-electrostimulation Influence on the Head Skin Capillary Blood Flow

Abstract: The pilot study of the ‘SYMPATHOCOR-01’ neuro-electrostimulation device influence on the head skin capillary blood flow is described. The infrared thermographic camera was used for the head skin capillary blood flow registration. The analysis of the registered thermograms was performed for mean head skin temperature evaluation. The experiment has shown that application of the neuro-electrostimulator in the blocking mode of the sympathetic nervous system caused the decrease of the head surface temperature. The temperature decrease is associated with the perfusion rate increase on the capillary level, which is in agreement with the neuro-electrostimulation application techniques.
